The Bat Men part 5 of 7: Breaking Points
Bruce and Terry are behind bars and to pass the time, Bruce tells the story of Kirk Langstrom and his wife, Francine. Meanwhile, the task force Barbara Gordon tried to stop is in full seal team six mode. The book ends with the task force confronting Man Bat and me wiping a tear from my eye.
Kyle Higgins slows down the story in order to tell the origin of the Man Bat. Let me just say, "Damn you Kyle Higgins!" You made me care about the Man Bat. I never thought it would happen, but the story of why Kirk developed the Man Bat serum and later formed the Cult of the Bat is more touching than I could have imagined. What really makes it hit home is that Bruce tells the story, not with anger or disdain, but with compassion and understanding. Yes, Kirk has become an enemy, but deep down I still think Bruce considers him a friend. I still hate the hundreds of variations of Man Bat's running amok in the DCU, but Kyle's now gets a pass.
The book ends with a little action as the task force attacks Kirk and his Bats, but this book was pure character development. Pure, delightful character development. The stuff is about to hit the fan, and now I'm not sure how I want it to end. If Kirk lives I'm OK with that. Two issues ago that wouldn't have been the case.
Thony Silas' art is awesome. It's always awesome. It will always be awesome. I am not his agent, acquaintance or third cousin. I am a comic lover with eyes. My eyes don't lie and they tell me this book looks awesome.
Batman Beyond 2.0 #13 continues Kyle Higgins and Thony Silas' reign as DC tag team champs. If you have any interest in Batman, Batman Beyond or a well told story with great art, start buying this book now.
